German clean sweep of the podium in Winterberg
Lisa Buckwitz and Vanessa Mark claimed World Championship gold in the two-woman bobsleigh as Germany swept the podium in Winterberg.
The pair celebrated Mark’s birthday in style, winning with a time of 3:43.99 over the four runs having led the pack since the second run.
Driver Buckwitz improved on last year’s silver position and was just four hundredths of a second off the track record in the final run set by their German compatriots a run earlier.
Duo Laura Nolte and Deborah Levi set that record with a time of 55.75 but finished five hundredths of a second in total behind the winners for silver.
Fellow Germans Kim Kalicki and Leonie Fiebig settled for third with a total finishing time of 3:44.27.
Meanwhile, there is more reason for excitement for German fans in the four-man bobsleigh, where Francesco Friedrich, Thorsten Margis, Alexander Schueller and Felix Straub head an all-German top three at the halfway stage.
