Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has responded to Nottingham Forest supporters’ chant towards Darwin Nunez during Liverpool’s narrow 1-0 victory at the City Ground.
The Uruguay international, returning to the squad from the bench, hit the winner late on, glancing home Alexis Mac Allister’s cross in the ninth minute of stoppage time.
The striker was introduced to the game on the hour mark, replacing Andy Robertson, and was subjected to chants of “s*** Andy Carroll” from the home support.
Nunez, however, had the last laugh, with his goal sending The Reds four points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
Klopp condemned the chant during his post-match press conference.
“I would not sing a song like that,” he said. “I would not try to wind Darwin up.
“The goal was super deserved for him. They can sing it when Darwin responds like that.”
Liverpool were playing their fourth game in 11 days, which put their already-stretched squad to yet another test, and Klopp hailed his players’ defensive efforts against the Nottingham Forest counter attack.
“In the second half, the game got more difficult,” Klopp explained.
“They brought on Taiwo Awoniyi, who’s a real handful and target player for counter attacks, with [Anthony] Elanga, [Callum] Hudson-Odoi, and [Morgan] Gibbs-White around him.
“With the space there, we defended that exceptionally [until] the last moment.”
Klopp also singled out provider Mac Allister for praise following his performance.
“The goal was set up by a guy who was the calmest on the whole pitch,” Klopp said.
“I saw it only live but I’ll never forget it. He was calm. He chips the ball there. Super assist and super important goal.”
He added: “If you’d told me 12 days ago we would win all four games I would have said no chance, it was impossible. In the circumstances winning the games is ridiculous.”
