England’s Joe Root and Nat Sciver-Brunt have been shortlisted for 2023 ICC awards, joining Sophie Ecclestone and Lauren Bell. Root is on the four-man shortlist for Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year, while Sciver-Brunt has been nominated for the Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year and the Women’s Cricketer of the Year awards. England’s Sophie Ecclestone and Lauren Bell are also up for awards.
Joe Root and Nat Scriver-Brunt have become the latest English cricketers to be shortlisted for a 2023 ICC Award.
Batter Root has been nominated in the category of Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year, while Sciver-Brunt is on the four-person shortlist for the Women’s Cricketer of the Year award, as well as the Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year.
They join Sophie Ecclestone, who was nominated for the ICC Women’s T20 Player of the Year.
Root, a former Test captain, is up against India’s Ravi Ashwin and Australians Travis Head and Usman Khawaji.
The 30-year-old enjoyed another stellar season with the bat for England. He averaged 65.58 in the red-ball format last year and was instrumental in helping England salvage a draw in the Ashes.
Sciver-Brunt faces stiff opposition for the ODI award in the form of New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr, Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner and Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu.
The 31-year-old was England’s Player of the Series in the multi-format Women’s Ashes in 2023, scoring 271 runs across the three ODI matches in a drawn series against Australia.
Sciver-Brunt is also up for the Women’s Cricketer of the Year and is joined again by Gardner and Athapaththu, with Australia’s Beth Mooney rounding out the shortlist.
Spinner Ecclestone has been nominated for the Women’s T20 Player of the Year after an excellent 12 months in an England shirt.
Despite missing four months with a shoulder injury, she finished 2023 ranked as the No. 1 bowler in both white ball formats and takes on all-rounder Hayley Mathews of the West Indies, Ellyse Perry of Australia, and Athapaththu for the award.
Ecclestone helped England to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup, finishing the tournament as the leading wicket taker. The 24-year-old took 23 wickets from 11 T20 internationals in 2023 at an average rate of just over 10 runs.
Lauren Bell, Ecclestone’s team-mate, has also been nominated for the Emerging Cricketer of the Year award. The fast bowler took 22 wickets last year and is joined on the shortlist by Marufa Akter of Bangladesh, Scotland’s Darcey Carter, and Australia’s Phoebe Litchfield.
No England player has been nominated for the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, awarded to the Men’s Cricketer of the Year.
