FA Cup: Ten-man Wolves force replay with Brentford, Fulham edge past Rotherham United in third round

Wolves snuck a draw in the FA Cup despite going down to 10 men against Brentford, as the visitors held the hosts 1-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium. Joao Gomes was sent off for Gary O’Neil’s side, before Neal Maupay opened the scoring. Tommy Doyle equalised just after the hour to force a replay. Fulham secured a 1-0 win over Rotherham United, thanks to a 24th-minute goal from Bobby Decordova-Reid.

Ten-man Wolves live another day in the FA Cup after they escaped the Gtech Stadium with a 1-1 draw against Brentford, forcing a third-round replay.

The visitors, operating with midfielder Jeanricner Bellegarde up front, had Joao Gomes dismissed after nine minutes for a two-footed lunge on Christian Norgaard, which forced the Brentford captain off.

Neal Maupay, the only recognised striker on the pitch, broke the deadlock with four minutes remaining until half-time, lashing home with his left foot after a penalty box melee.

Tommy Doyle hauled Gary O’Neil’s Wolves level just after the hour with a rasping drive from range that arrowed into the top-right corner, giving Thomas Strakosha in the home net no chance.

This game highlighted both side’s desperate need for a goalscorer, and while Brentford will welcome back their talisman Ivan Toney next week, Wolves will need to take the plunge in the transfer market and source an out-and-out No. 9.

Sasa Kalajdzic, the Austrian signed from Stuttgart last season, has failed to impress O’Neil since the former Bournemouth manager arrived, and he is due to be loaned out to Frankfurt in the coming days. He was an unused substitute here.

It’s back to the Black Country to run this one back.

Elsewhere, Fulham eked past the Championship’s basement boys Rotherham United 1-0 at Craven Cottage.

Bobby Decordova-Reid’s 24th-minute strike was the difference between the two sides, as The Cottagers duly punished some sloppiness in the visitors’ playing out from the back, as Sebastian Revan was pressured.

The Aston Villa loanee was challenged by Harry Wilson, and the ball ricocheted towards the edge of the area, where Decordova-Reid was running onto it. The forward took one touch to set himself, before firing a corker of a right-footed effort into the top corner beyond the grasp of Viktor Johansson.

The Swedish shot-stopper denied the hosts from doubling their lead as he tipped away a powerful header from Tosin Adarabioyo from an Andreas Pereira outswinger, but that’s as good as it got for Marco Silva’s men, who were unconvincing, but are into the fourth round.
