There was more joy in Paris for British pair Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid after they powered their way past Takuya Miki and Tokito Oda to secure a fifth consecutive men’s wheelchair doubles title at Roland-Garros. Hewett and Reid made relatively light work of the Japanese duo in the French capital to continue their impressive recent dominance of the event.
British duo Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid claimed a fifth successive French Open men’s wheelchair doubles title, after overcoming Japanese pair Takuya Miki and Tokito Oda.
Hewitt and Reid got the job done in straight sets with a 6-1 6-4 victory in what was a routine win compared to their semi-final victory on Saturday.
They overcame Argentinian Gustavo Fernandez and Frenchman Stephane Houdet in the last four, after losing the first set to win 3-6 6-2 10-8.
The pair set the stall out early on in the final by breaking serve in the opening game, and managed to repeat this in the fifth and seventh to take the first set after a mere 26 minutes.
It was a cagier affair in the second set, with Miki and Oda faring better on their service game, until being broken again in the sixth game.
They followed up with an immediate break back, but Hewett and Reid would penetrate through their serve once again to seal a memorable victory.
This is also a 20th Grand Slam doubles title for the pair, having won five each at Wimbledon, the Australian Open and US Open. Both players will return to Paris to compete at the Paralympic Games in September.
Speaking after the win, Hewett said: “It was a really enjoyable match and hopefully in a few months we can produce similar tennis.
“We’ve had lots of battles and they beat us last time, and I’m sure we will have many more finals in the future.”
Roland-Garros has yielded plenty of success for Hewett and Reid, after already winning this event in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
Hewett and Reid were not the only British players in action on Sunday, as their compatriot Andy Lapthorne and Israeli Guy Sasson faced Dutchmen Niels Vink and Sam Schroder in the men’s quad wheelchair doubles final.
However, they could not add to Hewett and Reid’s success after a 7-6(9) 6-1 defeat against the top-seeded pair.
