The Netherlands have suffered another injury setback ahead of Euro 2024 with Teun Koopmeiners ruled out of the tournament. Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee – who is the subject of transfer interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs – has been selected as the replacement for Koopmeiners by Ronald Koeman. They begin their campaign against Poland on June 16.
Manchester United and Arsenal target Joshua Zirkzee has been called up by the Netherlands for Euro 2024.
The Bologna forward has replaced Teun Koopmeiners, who sustained a groin injury before their final friendly against Iceland.
It is the latest injury problem for Ronald Koeman after Frenkie de Jong was ruled out of the tournament due to an ankle problem.
However, in Zirkzee, Koeman has been able to call upon one of European football’s most wanted players, with several big clubs tracking his progress.
The Bayern Munich youth product spent time on loan at Parma and Anderlecht before making the move to Italy in the summer of 2022.
After limited game time in his first season, it was the most recent campaign where Zirkzee started to catch the eye with 11 league goals to his name.
He also ranked in the top five players in Serie A for creating chances and attempted dribbles.
AC Milan are also reportedly interested in signing Zirkzee – who has a £34 million release clause in his contract.
The 23-year-old’s profile could rise even higher if he impresses in Germany this summer.
The Netherlands begin their Euro 2024 campaign against Poland on June 16, before further group stage matches against France and Austria.
