Norway clock world-record time to claim European Speed Skating Championships gold ahead of Italy

Sander Eitrem, Peder Kongshaug and Sverre Lunde Pedersen set a new record in the men’s team pursuit as Norway flexed their muscles to take a gold medal on the opening night of European Speed Skating Championships action in the Dutch city of Heerenveen on Friday. Norway stormed to European men’s team pursuit gold in a world-record time on the opening night of European Speed Skating Championships action in Heerenveen.

Sander Eitrem, Peder Kongshaug and Sverre Lunde Pedersen clocked 3:34.22 to stun the Dutch crowd on Friday night, sealing gold by 6.25 seconds ahead of Italy to add the European crown to their Olympic title in style.

The Netherlands team of Marcel Bosker, Chris Huizinga and Bart Hoolwerf took bronze on home ice, just under a second behind the Italian team of Andrea Giovanni, Davide Ghiotto and Michele Malfatti but a comfortable five seconds ahead of the chasing Polish and French trios.

The women’s team pursuit title went to home favourites Netherlands, as Marrit Fledderus, Femke Kok and Antoinette Rijpma-De Jong edged Polish trio Andzelika Wojcik, Iga Wojtasik and Karolina Bosiek by 0.70 seconds.

Norway completed the podium in third, a further 0.77 seconds back.
