Luton require a near-miraculous end to the Premier League season after suffering a 3-1 defeat against West Ham. Goals from James Ward-Prowse, Tomas Soucek and 19-year-old George Earthy sent Hammers manager David Moyes, who was overseeing his last home game, off in style. Elsewhere, Newcastle’s hopes of a second consecutive season of European football suffered a blow against Brighton.
Luton’s Premier League status is hanging by a thread after West Ham battled back to win 3-1 in David Moyes’ last home game as manager.
The Hatters thought they were on their way to a famous victory when Arsenal loanee Albert Sambi Lokonga scored in the sixth minute.
However, James Ward-Prowse got the hosts back on level terms with a right-footed strike nine minutes after half-time.
Things went from bad to worse for Rob Edwards’ side shortly after when Tomas Soucek, a favourite of Moyes’ during his time at the London Stadium, gave West Ham the lead.
Nineteen-year-old George Earthy made sure of things in the 76th minute, scoring his first senior goal for The Irons to send Moyes off in style.
Luton are now three points behind fourth-bottom Nottingham Forest with only one game left to play, and they need to overcome a significantly worse goal difference.
They play Fulham at home next week, while ninth-placed West Ham face a trip to title-chasing Manchester City.
Newcastle’s push for European football suffered a blow as they drew 1-1 with Brighton in their final outing at St James’ Park this season.
Joel Veltman gave the visitors the lead against the run of the play, prodding the ball past Martin Dubravka from close range after a corner caused chaos in Newcastle’s box.
However, Sean Longstaff got his side back on level terms after excellent work from Elliot Anderson and England hopeful Anthony Gordon.
The hosts thought they had scored a winner after the break, but Gordon’s finish was ruled out for offside and the spoils were shared.
Manchester United and Chelsea now have the chance to go level on points with The Magpies, who sit in sixth with a trip to Brentford to come.
The Seagulls are 10th with a home game against Chelsea next up on Wednesday.
Michael Olise’s stunner helped Crystal Palace go six games unbeaten with a 3-1 triumph over Wolves at Molineux.
Olise scored twice in Palace’s 4-0 demolition of Manchester United last Monday, and it took him 26 minutes to find the back of the net again.
The French winger shrugged off two Wolves defenders before curling the ball around Dan Bentley and into the bottom-right corner.
Palace doubled their lead just two minutes later, and their French maestro was at the heart of it again.
The winger drove into the box, with the ball eventually finding Palace’s Player of the Season Jean-Philippe Mateta, who finished past Bentley for his 16th goal of the campaign.
Matheus Cunha got Wolves back in the game, firing home at the end of a nice passing move in the box with 24 minutes remaining.
However, Eberechi Eze sealed the win for Palace in the closing stages, dribbling the ball around the goalkeeper before slotting into a near-empty net.
Naouirou Ahamada was sent off for The Eagles late on to take some gloss off their win.
The result sees Palace leapfrog Wolves into 12th ahead of their season-closer against Aston Villa, while Gary O’Neil’s side are now 13th ahead of a trip to Anfield.
Yoane Wissa’s 95th-minute strike inspired Brentford to a 2-1 win over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
The game appeared to be heading towards a 0-0 draw until Bryan Mbeumo scored his ninth goal of the season with just four minutes of normal time remaining.
The hosts thought they had rescued a point three minutes later when top scorer Dominic Solanke headed the ball into the bottom-left corner of Mark Flekken’s goal.
However, Wissa capped an amazing end to the game when he linked up with Mbeumo before finishing from six yards to seal the win.
The result leaves Brentford in 16th, while Bournemouth are 11th with Chelsea to come next week.
Abdoulaye Doucoure’s goal helped Everton beat already-relegated Sheffield United 1-0 at Goodison Park.
The midfielder got on the end of Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s cross before heading the ball past Wes Foderingham from close range.
Doucoure almost scored again before half-time, but his effort went just wide of the post.
The Toffees travel to Arsenal next week, while The Blades will be hoping to end a difficult season on a high when they welcome Tottenham to Bramall Lane.
