As discussion surrounding a return to management surrounds three-time Premier League winner Jose Mourinho, the former Chelsea boss dropped a major hint regarding his next move. When asked by TNT Sports who is his most famous phone contact, Mourinho responded: “The president of Fenerbahce”. The 61-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Istanbul following his Roma exit in January.
Jose Mourinho dropped a major hint surrounding his potential return to management as he revealed to TNT Sports his contact with the president of Fenerbahce.
Mourinho left Roma after two-and-a-half years in charge of the club in January, and he has been strongly linked with a move to Turkish club Fenerbahce in recent weeks.
The Super Lig club even confirmed reports in a statement to the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP) on Saturday – saying negotiations had begun with the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss.
Mourinho joined a star-studded team for TNT Sports’ coverage of the UEFA Champions League final between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. Saturday’s kick-off is 20:00 UK time, with live coverage on TNT Sports 1 and TNT Sports Ultimate commencing at 18:00 and discovery+.
And Mourinho did not shy away from publicising his contact with the Turkish club when asked by TNT Sports’ Rio Ferdinand who is his most famous phone contact.
Mourinho responded: “At this moment? The president of Fenerbahce.”
The former Chelsea boss is one of world football’s most decorated coaches, having won three Premier League titles alongside three League Cups and an FA Cup in charge of the London club – as well as Champions League titles with Porto and Inter Milan.
It now seems Mourinho will be tasked with returning silverware to a Fenerbahce side who have failed to claim the Super Lig trophy since 2014.
When asked directly about his potential move to Fenerbahce during TNT Sports’ coverage of the Champions League final, Mourinho responded: “I would say that maybe I travel tomorrow.”
The Istanbul-based side fell short in the title-race to Galatasaray in the 2023-24 season, despite finishing on 99 points. Ismail Kartal, who was in charge of the side since 2022, was removed from his post last week.
His departure has opened the door for the high-profile capture of Mourinho, who most recently led Serie A club Roma to consecutive sixth-place finishes. He also led the club to their first European trophy in 60 years with their UEFA Europa Conference League triumph in 2022.
Mourinho, who has accumulated 26 trophies throughout his managerial career, also had prominent spells with Premier League clubs Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, including leading the former to a second-placed finish in 2017-18.
