Sean Dyche says last-gasp Tottenham draw shows positives of ‘truth line’ from points deduction for Everton

Jarrad Branthwaite’s injury-time equaliser against Tottenham to snatch a 2-2 draw reflects Everton’s fighting spirit from their 10-point Premier League deduction, according to Sean Dyche. Everton were punished for breaking FFP rules meaning they are battling for survival, but Dyche hailed the way the club rallied after they twice came from behind against high-flying Spurs.

Sean Dyche praised the way Everton’s points deduction has pulled the club together on and off the pitch after his side snatched a late draw against Tottenham.

Everton would have started the weekend 12th in the table without their penalty for breaking the Premier League’s FFP rules, but players and fans have been putting on a united front under Dyche after several fractured years at Goodison Park before his arrival.

The Toffees have appealed the deduction but found themselves in the relegation zone following Luton Town’s midweek thrashing of Brighton, with the possibility of a second penalty coming if that case is unsuccessful.

The home fans staged a protest against the Premier League during the game, but Everton never looked distracted on the pitch as they twice came from behind from Richarlison goals for Tottenham.

The Toffees remain in the relegation zone thanks to Luton’s thrilling draw against Newcastle, but it is nothing new for Dyche at Goodison Park as they only avoided the drop last season thanks to a final-day win over Bournemouth.

“It’s difficult, there’s a lot of challenges but when I walked in it was even more challenging, we’ve managed to sort a few out and I think we’ve hit a ‘truth line’ through the club,” Dyche told TNT Sports.

“When the 10 points came along regardless of all the noise, I think every Evertonian, every Toffee went ‘hang on a minute, they need us now if they ever need us’. And as long as they’re giving a lot out there, come with us.”

Dyche added: “I thought the fans played their part again, it’s going to be important going forward because we’ve got to stay strong but we’ve got to do it out there. Fans can give you so much but we’ve got to continue to work out there and I thought we did today.

“I thought we were very good at least for most of the game, some of the quality on show, the will, the desire and the underbelly of a good side was on show. I thought it was the minimum of the right outcome, we certainly deserved a point and you could argue we could’ve nicked it.”

Both goals came from crosses with Jack Harrison proving a nuisance to Guglielmo Vicario throughout the first half before deflecting his side level on the half-hour mark, and Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou criticised Everton’s route-one tactics claiming they only provided an aerial threat.

However, Dyche defended his tactics and stressed to TNT Sports’ Peter Crouch that his side primarily focus on themselves ahead of matches rather than the opposition.

He said: “I thought the delivery was good, it’s strange – five or six years ago set pieces were almost frowned upon, you weren’t allowed to be good at set pieces, now it’s almost admired and I think rightly so.

“It’s a great chance, great opportunity to affect sides and you might not get that many but if the mentality’s good you can score a goal and I think we’ve got it here, I think there’s a real belief when the ball goes in to fight to score a goal and we can add that into our general play I think.”
