After falling 2-0 down to Everton within 15 minutes at Walton Hall Park, Tottenham Hotspur responded with goals either side of half-time to salvage a 2-2 draw at Walton Hall Park. Drew Spence netted just before half-time and provided the assist for Beth England to level the game on 48 minutes. Elsewhere in the WSL, Alisha Lehmann’s 64th-minute goal helped Aston Villa to a 1-0 win over Brighton.
Drew Spence spearheaded Tottenham’s comeback from two goals behind as she bagged a goal and an assist to salvage a 2-2 draw at Everton in the Women’s Super League.
Sara Holmgaard opened the scoring, firing an emphatic left-footed finish past Rebecca Spencer after being played into the box by Clare Wheeler. Justine Vanhaevermaet plunged further misery upon Spurs when she bundled home from a poorly defended corner to double the hosts’ lead.
However, Spence – who has been forced to miss much of the WSL campaign through a hamstring injury – halved the deficit after taking down Eveliina Summanen’s long ball and rounding Courtney Brosnan to tap home moments before half-time.
And the visitors completed the turnaround three minutes after the interval, as Spence dispossessed Wheeler to allow Beth England to slide the ball into an empty net.
Despite being in the ascendancy after the break, Spurs couldn’t find the breakthrough goal and settled for their third consecutive draw, leaving them seven points behind fifth-placed Liverpool.
Elsewhere in the WSL on Saturday, Aston Villa clinched a 1-0 victory over Brighton in their first match since the announcement of the impending departure of manager Carla Ward at the end of the season.
Alisha Lehmann fired home on 64 minutes to score her second goal of the league season, just a week after netting her first against West Ham United.
The 1-0 win over Brighton was manager Ward’s penultimate game in the Villa dugout. It was announced by the club on Friday that Ward will be stepping down from the Villa hotseat at the end of the season to “prioritise the other important things – such as my daughter and the rest of my family life”.
The result leaves Villa in seventh-place with just one match of the season remaining – at home to champions-elect Manchester City. Meanwhile, Brighton remain in ninth, and face Arsenal on the final day.
